This guide to Washington veteran benefits covers both state programs run through the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) and partners, and federal VA benefits (health care, disability compensation, GI Bill®, VA home loans). This guide focuses on Washington-specific benefits veterans and eligible family members use most often—property tax relief, tuition waivers, employment preference, state veterans homes, parks passes, and where to get free local help—updated for 2026. This page covers Washington state, not Washington, D.C.
Programs, dollar amounts, and eligibility rules change. Always confirm with the official agency linked below, WDVA claims assistance, or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs before you apply.
Washington Veteran Benefits: Population & Overview
Washington’s lead state agency for veterans is the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA). WDVA provides free claims assistance, operates state veterans homes, and publishes benefit guides for service-connected disabled veterans and families. Use current VA NCVAS state summary / VetPop tables for population planning figures—do not rely on commercial rankings.
Washington has no state personal income tax. Under HB 2014, state law expanded who may qualify for certain state benefits and licensing designations (for example, veterans already eligible for federal VA monetary benefits, and certain less-than-honorable separations tied solely to sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression). Eligibility for a specific program still depends on that program’s rules—confirm on WDVA’s definition page and with the administering agency.

Washington Veteran Medical & Healthcare Benefits
VA health care (federal)
Most clinical care for veterans is through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Eligibility depends on service history, discharge status, income in some priority groups, and other federal rules—not WDVA membership. WDVA accredited service officers assist free with disability compensation, pension, Aid & Attendance, health care enrollment, and related federal/state/county benefits.

Washington State Veterans Homes (state long-term care)
WDVA operates four state veterans homes (Medicare/Medicaid certified, 24-hour nursing). These are state facilities—different from VA medical centers.
- Washington Soldiers Home — Orting (128 beds)
- Washington Veterans Home (Retsil) — Port Orchard (240 beds)
- Spokane Veterans Home — Spokane (100 beds)
- Walla Walla Veterans Home — Walla Walla (80 beds)
Admission eligibility (WDVA themes): service in the U.S. Armed Forces including National Guard; honorable discharge or already eligible for federal VA monetary benefits or less-than-honorable separation solely due to sexual orientation/gender identity/expression (per WDVA criteria); Washington residency; also spouse of a resident, widow of an eligible veteran, or Gold Star parent. Veterans rated 70%–100% service-connected (or whose SC disability is the reason nursing care is needed) may have nursing-home care paid by federal VA under applicable rules.
